Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15
2The Jamaica Evangelistic Mission (JEM) churches, often referred to as the Tabernacle Churches, are located in the rural, mountainous areas of Northern Jamaica. The JEM is one of the largest denominations on the island. The members’ desire for a deeper knowledge of God’s Word prompted the dream of JEM pastors to establish a Bible College which would provide biblical training for pastors, lay leaders and Christian counselors at an affordable price and at convenient locations on the northern end of the island.
Online and satellite Bible college courses are common. But, those learning options are not free. Many Jamaicans struggle to keep food on the table, clothes for their growing families and the electricity on. So, taking college level courses is not possible.
The first part of the dream has become a reality with the implementation of the JEM Bible Certificate Program which requires students to complete nine courses. These courses taught by instructors qualified to teach at a college level include:
Spiritual Leadership, Life Principles From the Book of James, Life Principles From
the Book of Jonah, Christian Ethics and Introduction to Christian Counseling.
Since June 2013, thirteen teams have journeyed to Jamaica to present the courses.
Five more teams are scheduled for early 2015. Graduation for students that have
faithfully participated in the institute is scheduled for May 2015.
SBI Jamaica wants to thank all of the instructors that have participated in the
Institute: Members of the Simon’s Branch, Inc. leadership team: Dr. Shirley Fitz-Ritson, Executive Director; Brother Rodney Smith, Board Chairman; Sister Debra Townes, Vice Board Chairperson, Reverend Ronnie Stanley, Board Member and Dr. Pennon Lockhart, Board Member. Special thanks also to instructors Minister Carmen Davis, Minister Janice Irby, Pastor Gary Favors, Brother Lewis Eikner (one of the original eight that started Simon’s Branch in 2002), Brother Wayne Paul, Minister Twana Bowman, Sister Mary Jones, Pastor Spencer Hardaway, Brother Sylvester Harrison and Dr. Cherrilyn Henry (a member of the JEM Bible Institute Committee in Jamaica).
The following churches were hosts for the courses: Zone One: Brown’s Town Tabernacle (Pastor Fitzroy Thomas); Zone Two: St. D’Acre Tabernacle (Pastor Rudolph McFarlane); Zone Three: Discovery Bay Tabernacle (Pastor Horace Rose)and Zone Four: Cumberland Tabernacle (Pastor Lloyd Millen). Our desire is to extend these courses to churches in the remotest parts of the island.
